Instagram Hashtags Limit: How Many You Can Use
The Instagram hashtags limit is 5 per post. That's what Instagram's own Help Center said when I read it on November 3, 2026, and it adds that a post with more than 5 won't go up. Here's the rest of what you need:
- The limit: up to 5 hashtags on a post.
- The catch: a second Meta help page still says one comment can hold up to 30 hashtags. Meta's own pages don't match yet.
- Do they help: a little, for search. Meta says relevant trending hashtags can help the right people find a reel. Still, 31 of my 32 biggest reels, the ones above 100,000 views, had no hashtags at all.
- What I use instead: a strong first line on screen, tested with Trial Reels.
- Why 2027: with 2026 almost over, this is the rule you'll post under next year. I checked Meta's pages the day I wrote this, and I'll update this page when the rule moves again.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram, according to Meta?
Hashtag rules change, and plenty of articles still repeat old numbers. So I skipped them and went straight to Meta's own pages. Here's exactly what each one says.
| Meta page | What it says |
|---|---|
| Help Center: Use hashtags on Instagram | Up to 5 tags on a post. With more than 5, it won't post. Hashtags can go in the caption or in a comment on your own post. |
| Help Center: errors when you add a comment | No more than 30 hashtags in a single comment, and no more than 5 @ mentions. |
| Instagram for Creators FAQ | Trending hashtags that fit your reel's topic can help you reach people who care about that topic. Off-topic hashtags can hurt. |
| Instagram for Creators: Tips for Improving Your Reach (May 31, 2023) | Keywords in your caption, your bio and your hashtags help people find you in Search. |
The same hashtag help page adds a few smaller rules. Posts from private profiles don't show up on hashtag pages. Hashtags can include numbers, but not spaces or symbols like $ or %. And you can only add hashtags to your own posts.
Here's what Meta hasn't published on any of these pages: the date the limit changed, whether Reels and photos follow different rules, and how hashtags in your caption and in your comments add up together. Until Meta says more, I'd keep the total at 5 or fewer.

When did Instagram limit hashtags to 5?
Meta's help page doesn't give a date, but news reports do. On December 18, 2025, The Verge reported that Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said the app would cap hashtags at five per post. In the same post he said a few specific tags perform better than a long list of general ones.
- 2025I still added hashtags to most posts: 24 of my 27 reels with hashtags went up that year, with as many as 9 tags on one reel.My reels

Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
A little, and mostly for search. Meta's creator FAQ says relevant, trending hashtags can help you reach people who care about that topic, and that Instagram uses hashtags and audio to spot trends. The same answer warns against off-topic hashtags, because your reel can end up in front of people who don't care, and that hurts it. The Verge's report has Mosseri saying hashtags help with search but don't increase reach.
So treat a hashtag like a label on a box. It helps someone looking for that topic find you. It won't carry a weak reel.
My own reels back that up. Here's how all 243 of them split:
One catch, so you don't read too much into this. My reels with hashtags have the higher median, 16,954 views against 4,514. All 27 sit on my profile grid, and most went up in 2025, so they've had more time and more profile visitors to collect views. My data doesn't prove hashtags hurt. It shows my biggest reels never needed them.

Hashtags aren't what moves my reels. My free video shows what does.
Watch the videoHow many hashtags should you use?
Somewhere from zero to 5. Here's how I'd pick them:
- Name the topic of the reel in a few words, the way you'd label a folder.
- Use a hashtag only if a stranger searching it would be glad to find your reel.
- Skip the giant general tags. Meta's FAQ warns that reaching people who aren't interested can hurt a reel.
- Put the same keywords in your caption and your bio. Meta says that helps people find you in Search.
- Stop at 5. Per the help page, more than that and it won't post.
On my own account I use none right now. My reels are one line of text over one quiet shot, and those words do the work a hashtag used to do.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the comments?
Meta's help page says either one works. You can type them into your caption, or add them in a comment on your own post. It also says you can add a hashtag after posting by editing your caption or commenting.
The page doesn't say one spot ranks better than the other. I'd put them in the caption so they're part of the post from the first second, and keep the total at 5 or fewer.
What I use instead of hashtags
| Instead of | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Piling on hashtags | A stronger first line on screen | Under three different first lines (and songs), one clip of mine went from 2,758 views to 85,878 to 747,760 |
| Hashtag research | Keywords in your caption and bio | Meta says they help people find you in Search |
| Hashtag "reach hacks" | Trial Reels | They go to non-followers first, so you can test a line before your followers see it |
| Trending hashtags | Trending audio | Meta says it spots trends with audio as well as hashtags |
| Counting likes | Shares and saves | Meta weighs sharing when it decides how far a reel goes |

Can too many hashtags get you shadowbanned?
Meta doesn't use the word shadowban. Here's what it does say. Content that goes against its Recommendations Guidelines can drop out of the places that show posts to non-followers, and off-topic hashtags can hurt a reel's distribution. Go over 5 and, per the help page, your post won't go up at all.

Questions people ask
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
Up to 5 on a post, according to Instagram's Help Center on November 3, 2026. With more than 5, the help page says it won't post.
Are hashtags still worth using?
As labels, yes. Meta says relevant trending hashtags can help people interested in that topic find your reel. They won't save a weak reel, and of my 32 reels above 100,000 views, 31 used none.
What is the 3-3-3 hashtag rule?
It's a rule of thumb you'll see from marketers, and the versions don't agree. I couldn't find it on any Instagram or Meta page. The rule Meta does publish is the limit: up to 5 hashtags on a post.
What happens if you use more than 5 hashtags on Instagram?
Instagram's help page says a post with more than 5 tags won't post. Take out the extras and try again.
Do hashtags in the comments count?
Meta's help page says hashtags can go in your caption or in a comment on your own post, but it doesn't say how the two add up. A separate Meta page still allows 30 in one comment. I keep my total at 5 or fewer.
