How to Get Followers on Instagram
Here's how to get followers on Instagram without buying a single one: reach people who don't follow you yet, hold them with your first line, and give them a profile worth following. Every follower you'll ever earn starts out as a stranger watching one of your reels.
- Where followers come from: people who see your reels and don't follow you yet. Instagram's FAQ says new followers get more likely as a reel reaches more of them.
- My numbers: in 90 days I reached 6,634,284 accounts and got 31,092 follows. After 4,290 unfollows, that left me +26,888.
- The rate: about 5 follows for every 1,000 accounts I reached.
- What raised it: a better first line. On one clip, the strongest line turned viewers into followers about 5 times as often as the weakest.
- What to skip: bought followers and follower apps. Instagram can strip the fake activity, limit your account or shut it down.
How do people become followers on Instagram?
Every follow takes the same path. A stranger sees your reel. Your first line holds them. They watch, maybe twice, then tap your name. If your profile shows more of what they just enjoyed, they follow.
- 12,194,417views95.3% from people who didn't follow me
- 6,634,284accounts reacheddifferent people who saw something of mine
- 31,092followsabout 4.7 per 1,000 accounts reached
- +26,888net new followersafter 4,290 unfollows
Profile visits happen between the second and third box. My screenshots from that stretch don't show them, so I won't guess a number. That's the step where your bio and your other reels do the selling.
This was my best stretch, not my normal one, and it isn't a promise for yours. A smaller account, or one in a different niche, can do all of this right and grow much more slowly.

Why does a better hook bring more followers?
Here's the part most follower guides skip. A strong opening doesn't only add views. It changes who sticks around long enough to follow. I ran the same clip with three different lines of text (and songs), and checked how many people followed per 1,000 accounts each version reached.
The best line reached about 220 times as many accounts as the weakest. On top of that, each person it reached was about 5 times as likely to follow me. Those two effects stack, which is how one clip went from 4 new followers to 4,279.
That test is one clip on my account. Your numbers will differ, but the lesson travels: work on the first line before you work on anything else.

- Post reels on a steady rhythm. Instagram's 2025 creator post calls consistent posting one of the most effective ways to grow, because every reel is another chance to be recommended to new people.
- Hook a stranger in the first 3 seconds. Someone who doesn't know you gives you a moment, not a minute.
- Make each reel work on its own. A new viewer should get it without knowing who you are. Instagram gives the same advice for reaching new people.
- Make reels people want to send. Meta says that when your reels are recommended to new viewers, those people could become your future followers, and a send puts your reel in front of exactly those people.
- Keep it original. Instagram is less likely to recommend reposts of reels already on the app, or videos with another app's watermark.
- Make your profile match your reels. When a stranger taps your name, they should see more of what they just liked, in the same look and the same voice.
- Use the words people search. Instagram suggests putting relevant keywords in your bio and captions so people can find you in search.
- Collab with someone close to your niche. A Collab post is shared with both accounts' followers at once.
- Test new ideas on strangers first. Trial Reels go to non-followers first, so a miss doesn't land in your followers' feeds.
- Watch the right numbers. I track shares and saves before likes, because they tell me a reel is about to travel. I explain why in how to get more likes on Instagram.

Is buying Instagram followers worth it?
No. It looks like a shortcut, but it costs you the thing you were trying to buy: real people who watch.
| Bought followers | Earned followers | |
|---|---|---|
| Where they come from | Apps and sites that sell them, often asking for your login | People who saw your work and chose to follow |
| What Instagram does | Can remove the fake activity, limit parts of your account, or disable it | Nothing. That's the system working |
| Your login | An app with your login can read your messages and post spam | No login shared with anyone |
| US law | The FTC bans buying fake followers or views to look more influential for business, if you knew or should have known they were fake | Nothing to worry about |
| Your reach | A bigger number with no one behind it | Real viewers who watch, share and save |
Instagram has been removing fake likes, follows and comments made through third-party apps since November 2018. Its help page says accounts that keep using those apps may see parts of the account limited, and an account that gains likes or followers that way may be disabled. And because Instagram decides how far a reel goes partly on engagement per viewer, a crowd of followers who never watch does nothing for you.

Questions people ask
How can I get 1,000 followers on Instagram fast?
There's no shortcut that lasts. Get your reels in front of non-followers and give them a reason to follow. On my account, one strong line on one clip brought 4,279 follows by itself, while the same clip with a weak line brought 4.
Is buying followers on Instagram illegal?
Instagram forbids it, and it can remove the fake activity, limit your account or disable it. In the US, the FTC's 2024 rule also bans buying fake followers or views to look more influential for business when you know, or should know, they're fake. This isn't legal advice.
Why am I losing followers on Instagram?
Some unfollows are normal. Instagram's FAQ says your followers usually see a new reel first, and some unfollow as people tidy up who they follow. In my best 90 days I lost 4,290 followers and gained 31,092.
How often should I post to gain followers?
Often enough to keep testing. Instagram calls consistent posting one of the most effective ways to grow. During my best 90 days I posted 99 reels, usually 1 to 3 on a posting day.
Do Reels get you more followers than posts?
For reaching strangers, yes. Reels are built to be recommended to people who don't follow you, and Instagram says Reels make up over 50% of the time people spend on the app. Almost all of my views in my best 90 days came from reels.
